Dear Dr. Jacobson,
I was disturbed to learn that the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is not advocating policies that are "consistent with scientific evidence on health and environmental issues," as your Web site claims. For example, lengthening the animal cancer assay, which you are arguing for, will decrease the test’s already poor selectivity and result in even more false positives. This proposal along with your recent request that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommend even more animal studies of well-characterized stevia derivatives casts doubt on CSPI's ability to recognize sound science.
Not only do these efforts show a lack of compassion for the many animals who will suffer as a result, the tests that you advocate will also do nothing to improve public safety. I urge you to reconsider your stance on this important issue and to redirect your efforts toward progressive, non-animal methods that are actually capable of protecting consumers. Animals, public safety, and the credibility of your organization depend on it.
Sincerely,
X
